Bachelor of Arts - Child and Family Studies (CHFS)

Description

The Bachelor of Arts (CHFS) is a 120 credit program. The BA (CHFS) degree program is not offered fully online. Welcome to the Child and Family Studies (CHFS) program within the School of Human and Social Development at Nipissing University.
 
The Child and Family Studies Program is unique with a particular focus on two thematic areas of study:
1. Human Development and Learning; and
2. Child and Family Well-Being: Issues, Services, and Social Justice.
 
Students can pursue a General or Honours program of study. Further, you want a career within child and adult developmental and/or behaviour services, health/ mental health services, child welfare, education, justice, government, or even the private sector, and have a real appetite for social justice and making a significant difference. You may choose to complete one of our 2 Applied Certificates in Applied Behaviour Analysis or our Program Evaluation and Applied Research Certificate (PEAR) as you learn to improve systems and services for children, youth, or adults, across the social and human services sector.
 
Program of Study: Major in Child and Family Studies
 
Graduation Requirements: In addition to the program requirements listed below, students must also satisfy the Bachelor of Arts degree requirements, which include regulations on first year and subject maximum and breadth requirements.
 
Program Requirements: 
 
Students will need to achieve a minimum 60% average in the 36 credits presented for the Major in Child and Family Studies.
 
Students must complete 36 credits in the Major as follows: CHFS 1006: Introduction to Child and Family Studies PSYC 1106: Introduction to Psychology I PSYC 1107: Introduction to Psychology II SOCI 1016: Introduction to Sociology CHFS 2026: Methods in Behavioural and Social Sciences CHFS 2206: Children, Families, and Social Justice
 
Three credits from the following (may not take both for credit): CHFS 2106: Human Development: Children and Youth PSYC 2006: Childhood Development
 
Three credits from the following (may not take both for credit): CHFS 2107: Human Development: Adults and Aging PSYC 2007: Adult Development
 
Six credits from: CHFS 3035 or Statistics in Behavioural and Social Sciences PSYC 2126 and Scientific Methods and Analysis I PSYC 2127 Scientific Methods and Analyis II CHFS Group I: CHFS Upper level (including courses in Groups I and II) 3 cr.
 
Breadth Requirements: ACAD 1601 Humanities Science Note: Students may complete an Honours BA double major if they obtain an overall average of 70% in each Major, and complete an additional three credits (minimum) at the 4000 level in each Major. Please refer to the Degree Requirement section for further information.
