Self Care and Burnout Prevention
Description
This course is designed to provide an understanding of stress, burnout and vicarious traumatization found in the field of forensic practice. Secondary trauma is becoming increasingly recognized as a potentially negative side effect of working in helping professions. In this course, students will review the physiological and psychosocial effects that stress may cause and the methods of burnout prevention. Literature regarding the effects of work related burnout and traumatization will also be reviewed. In addition, evidence-based methods of prevention or inoculation and management will be examined in conjunction with ways in which to identify the early warning symptoms of these difficulties. Emphasis will be placed on learning strategies that promote optimal functioning and promote mental, physical and spiritual health for forensic practice professionals.
