The Master of Health Informatics (MHI) program is designed for professionals with backgrounds in public health and/or health care who require more knowledge about computer science and health informatics.
Graduates can use this knowledge to identify, design and manage informatics solutions relevant to health and health systems.
Program overview
- Designed for professionals with backgrounds in public health and/or health care: professionals who require more knowledge about computer science and health informatics in order to identify, design and manage informatics solutions relevant to health and health systems.
- You will learn from faculty who lead research in public health sciences and public health intervention design and evaluation.
- Through the experiential learning of a practicum position, you will experience what it is like to use the knowledge, tools, and skills learned in the MHI Program in a real public health setting.
- The MHI program is flexible for the working professional and is completed online as a part-time or full-time student.
Offered online
The Master of Health Evaluation program provides flexibility for the working professional and can be completed in 16 months to four years. It also features a four-month professional experience component.

Admission requirements
Minimum requirements
- An overall 75% average in a four year undergraduate degree program in a health or related field from a recognized educational institution.
- Experience in the health informatics field is considered an asset.
- Evidence of training in logical thinking processes which can be demonstrated by having passed an undergraduate course(s) in areas such as mathematics, statistics, or computer science.
- Admission is competitive. Meeting the minimum entrance requirements is not a guarantee of admission.

Required Courses
The MHI program requires the completion of 10 graduate-level courses. 8 (including the practicum course) of the 10 courses are required core courses. The remaining 2 courses are electives:

- CS 638 Principles of Data Management and Use or HLTH 605B Quantitative Methods and Analysis
- HLTH 611 The Health Care System
- HLTH 612/CS 792 Data Structures and Standards in Health Informatics
- HTLH 613 Information Technology for the Health Professional
- HLTH 615 Requirements Specification and Analysis in Health Systems
- HLTH 637 Public Health Informatics (offered online)
- HLTH 640 Professional Experience Practicum
In situations where a student has previously taken a course with learning objectives similar to that of a required MHI course, a higher level graduate course in the same domain area will be substituted.
