The Data Science Certificate is also available online. The School of Continuing Studies has partnered with University of Waterloo - WatSPEED to offer courses in this certificate in an online format. These courses are listed below under Required courses. Registration into the online courses is done through the University of Waterloo. Courses completed online will earn a joint University of Toronto SCS and University of Waterloo - WatSPEED certificate.

ABOUT THE CERTIFICATE

Organizations today need professionals who can extract and analyze extremely large amounts of data - Big Data - and present useful insights to business leaders. If you're one of them or would like to be, this certificate program is for you. You'll come away with the kind of deep analytical skills and abilities that organizations and recruiters value. Work with industry experts on advanced statistical modelling, machine learning, and natural language processing. You'll cover content essential for the toolbox of a predictive analytics professional, including neural networks and deep learning; programming languages and software used in data extraction and analysis; and data security, compliance, and privacy issues. The course content covers the 7 domains of INFORMS' Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) certification. You'll also learn how to represent data visually to help decision-makers understand your findings. Whether you work in operations, business intelligence, or marketing communications, are a recent math or science graduate, or want to change or advance your career, this certificate will open up the in-demand field of Big Data. This certificate is offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

Choose one (1) of the following two courses:

  • 3250 Foundations of Data Science
  • 3583 Data Science 1: Foundations of Data Science - ONLINE

AND one (1) of the following two courses:

  • 3251 Statistics for Data Science
  • 3584 Data Science 2: Statistics for Data Science - ONLINE

AND one (1) of the following two courses:

  • 3252 Big Data Management Systems & Tools
  • 3585 Data Science 3: Big Data Management Systems & Tools - ONLINE

AND one (1) of the following two courses:

  • 3253 Machine Learning
  • 3586 Data Science 4: Machine Learning - ONLINE

In place of 3250, you may instead choose both of the following:

  • 3250A Using Python I: Organize and Analyze Data
  • 3250B Using Python II: Clean, Predict and Inform

Certificate Requirements

You have three years from the start date of your first course to complete the certificate. Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) may be granted for one course: 3250 Foundations of Data Science OR 3251 Statistics for Data Science OR 3252 Big Data Management Systems & Tools. Courses completed online will earn a joint University of Toronto SCS and University of Waterloo PD certificate.
