Therapeutic Interventions for Dementia
Description
This subject explores the broad spectrum of neurocognitive and neurodegenerative disorders (NCDs & NDDs), formerly known as ?dementia?. Students will learn how to assess for and identify a variety of types of these disorders based on organic brain indicators, symptomology, and behavioural observations. Students will learn parts and functions of the brain and the difference between normal and abnormal brain function. The causal origins of these NCDs/NDDs will be discussed, as well as, current preventative measures and pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to slow the disease process and manage the symptoms. The family/caregiver and social impact of the disease and the management of NCDs & NDDs will be explored through the 4 most popular modalities; Medical Model, Eden Alternative Philosophy, Gentle Care Model, and Montessori Model. Students will learn about the family and professional caregiver resources and supports available. Alternative and experimental interventions used to optimize quality of life and slow the process of disease are investigated for individuals suffering from NCDs/NDDs. Students will apply targeted therapeutic programming and effective interventions for a variety of types of these disorders. In addition, specific issues affecting the primary caregivers who care for these seniors will be addressed including issues of; abuse, neglect, competency and substitute decision-making, ethical issues, anticipatory grief, and PTSD resulting from prolonged intensive caring and behavioural management, complexities of quarantines when working with this population, current pandemic protocols for protecting and managing the safety of this population in congregate spaces.
