The PN Role and Interprofessional Relationships
Description
This course introduces students to the Canadian healthcare system, the role of the practical nurse with a focus on the key concepts of interprofessional relationships: communication, patient/client -centred care, values and ethics, team functioning, collaborative leadership, role clarification and interprofessional conflict resolution. Students are introduced to interprofessional practice in the context of different healthcare professionals that make up an interprofessional team. An introduction to the regulation and professional practice of the practical nurse will include the roles and functions of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and provincial and national professional organizations, associations, and professional interest groups. Within this context, the CNO Professional Standards and Practice Guidelines as well as Professional Code of Conduct will be examined with additional focus placed on Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationship, Confidentiality Standards and Conflict Prevention and Management Guideline. There will be an emphasis on the roles, collaboration, self-concepts and principles of communication within the therapeutic nurse client relationship and interprofessional practice while providing compassionate, culturally safe care.
This course will be conducted on-line, with preliminary work done by the student prior to class. The student is responsible for reading texts and downloading handouts from Blackboard and websites and completing unit objectives and assigned learning activities prior to class.
The instructional methods of this course are comprised of a combination of learning methodologies: a combination of Synchronous (e.g., professor led) and Asynchronous (e.g., self-study) Learning (where applicable), discussion boards, small and large group discussions, cooperative learning activities, interactive lectures, case studies, self-study and multi-media resources such as the internet and videos.
The student should be prepared to participate and engage in discussions in class. Students may also be required to bring completed assigned learning activities to class. All weekly content may not be covered in class; however, students are responsible for learning this content as it will be evaluated in tests, examinations, and written assignments.
Completion of assigned readings on a weekly basis is important for student success in this course.
