Mindfulness-Based Chronic Pain Management™ Practical Training for Palliative Care Physicians
Description
This training is experiential, applying mindfulness concepts to chronic pain management, and using trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive best practices, including ethical, privacy and safety issues in group facilitation. Participants can be learners with lived experience, and/or professionals wishing to explore the application of mindfulness to chronic pain suffering, as well as in the context of end-of-life care and challenges.
The weekly format allows for a gradual unfolding of the benefits of Mindfulness practice for learners, their potential patients/clients and caregivers: professionals and family. This group work provides a template on which to base observations that could be made with a therapeutic patient/client group, as it includes some participant learners who manage their own suffering and chronic pain conditions.
In addition to exploring different types of formal practices, there is exposure to other components of the course, including trauma-sensitive preambles when introducing formal practices, skillful use of inquiry, and the exploration of relevant key topics through small group and large group discussions. Use of dyads and small groups as a trauma-sensitive and inclusive strategy provides insight and support for the diversity of interactions encountered in Mindfulness practice, while keeping participants close to their “Window of Tolerance”.
Secondary pain, context that influences pain perception, neuroplasticity, immunity, and end of life concepts will be explored.
The training provides insights into the lens through which those living with pain view their world, while showcasing trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive mindfulness communication. The training also manages chronic stress conditions, and a separate workbook is available (at an additional cost) for the stress course with parallel MBCPMTM content.
