Issues in Child Maltreatment and Neglect
Description
In this course, students will explore issues in child maltreatment and neglect. An understanding of definitions, indicators and assessment of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as neglect, will be reviewed. Students will have the opportunity to conduct risk assessments through the use of case studies and discuss the influence of physical and environmental factors on assessment, as well as the clinical challenges faced in current practice. The historical evolution of child maltreatment and neglect, values and diversity along with theories and practice and its relation to social issues shall be reviewed, as well as critique. Ideally, this course will facilitate discussion and debate regarding theoretical and clinical methods as they relate to case studies and best practices.
