Infant and Child Development
Description
This course will examine the growth and development of children from conception through middle childhood using a holistic lens. The fundamental concepts of developmental health and major theories of child development from both biological and social sciences will be critically examined. This course also introduces students to the methods, findings, and practical applications of research in child development. Emphasis will be placed on the influence of the complex interplay between biology and experience on developmental health, behaviour, and learning. Child development will be identified in the context of family, community, and culture. The focus of the course will be on examining the whole child (e.g., relationships with others, brain development, ecologies, resources, access, barriers, race, gender, and ethnicity) in relation to individual differences in developmental trajectories. Practices that support child/family health, coping, competence, learning and communication will also be highlighted.
