Human Behaviour in the Social Environment: Critical Perspectives on Identity, Culture and Society
Description
This course will explore human behaviour and development as processes that are shaped by competing ideologies of culture, power, and difference, and the implications that these understandings have for social work practice. Critical theories of power and oppression and Indigenous thought will be used to consider personal and community well-being and transformative social change from an intersectional perspective, particularly in relation to northern, rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Human development through the lifespan and the factors that facilitate and impede that development will also be considered. The ultimate aim of the course is to provide students with a critical, culturally-informed, and practice-oriented understanding of the interactions among biological, social, psychological, cultural, and economic systems and their impact upon human development and behavior.
