Family Work

Description

This course examines the concept of family, its stages of development and associated tasks. Students will be introduced to a variety of theories that will be useful to them in understanding and working with families. Particular attention will be paid to systems theory and assessing family functioning from this perspective. Emphasis will be given to the role of the Child and Youth Worker in assisting parents and children who are dealing with specific types of family conditions and problems. Students will develop role appropriate goals with parents and/or children in hypothetical case situations. They will analyze the variables affecting successful engagement of their clients into the problem solving process. They will develop strategies for effective child management. Emphasis will be placed on the establishment of effective collaborative relationships with other service delivery professionals.
