Critical Thinking in Practice

Description

In Critical Thinking in Practice, students develop and improve critical reading and thinking skills that are necessary for success in college-level courses and in the workplace. This is achieved by reviewing different mediums of communication and identifying implicit elements (audience, purpose and bias) and explicit elements (fact vs. opinion, valid vs. invalid evidence) within the message. This interactive, cooperative learning-based course is designed so that much of the course work will be completed within the allotted weekly class time. Main course concepts are discussed and practiced in class. Students demonstrate their learning through individual reflections and reading comprehension assignments. They also learn basic research and documentation skills.

Critical Thinking in Practice is designed along a unit structure, with the final aim being the creation of a portfolio of critical thinking and reading content. Within each unit students can expect some or all of the following: interactive lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, individual and group exercises and assignments, and peer and instructor feedback. Students will be expected to access information from a variety of sources, and are advised to be prepared to access information from online sources during synchronous class time. Depending on time and availability, a library orientation/workshop may also be included in the course.
