Contemporary Challenges Facing Native Communities
Description
Canada is a country of many Native and non-Native cultures. Comparative studies of these cultures will be conducted in order to create a deeper understanding of similarities and differences. Students will explore the varied belief systems, worldviews, values, and lifestyles of the main culture groups. As part of building an understanding of the inter-relationship among different sectors of society, students will examine the influence that living in remote areas of Canada has on individuals, families, and communities. Students will explore the community dynamics, structure, and history and will examine contemporary issues influencing these communities and people, in particular, the causes of and the social problems that alcohol and drug abuse play in these communities. Solutions to social problems will be explored.
