Community Response to Social Issues

This course introduces students to the study of social contemporary issues and community service agencies approaches and responses. It provides students with the opportunity to apply sociological concepts and perspectives to analyze social issues such as sexual orientation, mental health, poverty, addiction, sex trafficking, gender inequality, sexual violence and racial and ethnic inequalities. Students will examine the multitude of social service agencies offering assistance to individuals and communities. Community, community development, social power and resource allocation will be discussed in relation to social issues interventions. In addition, students will examine systemic barriers of communication and collaboration between these agencies and the Canadian criminal justice system. Students will develop skills in problem-solving, critical assessment, interpersonal and communication skills to assess the role social services agencies play in responding to community social issues. Finally, students will analyze the relevance of social issues, the impact of policing and the response of the Canadian criminal justice system.
