Applied Curriculum

Description

This course reflects the application of theory to practice in the development of curriculum for children from infancy to school age. Practical applications will be developed with an emphasis on emergent curriculum. The role of the adult in planning and creating environments and materials that support learning and development through play will be explored in the context of family, culture and community. Children's development in the areas of physical knowledge, pretend play, block play, and active/physical play will be examined. Special consideration will placed on learning through creative expression and art experiences in a small group studio format. Semester Two This course reflects the application of theory to practice in the development of curriculum for children from infancy to school age. Practical applications will be developed with an emphasis on emergent curriculum. The role of the adult in planning and creating environments and materials that support cognition and language, literacy, communication and math and science development will be explored in the context of family, culture and community. Emphasis will be placed on planning for individuals as well as group situations. The role of the teacher in planning and implementing curriculum in the outdoor environment as well as developing an integrated curriculum will also be considered. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Applied Curriculum Workshop This Studio course is part of the Applied Curriculum course, and reflects the importance of creative and arts-based experiences in young children's learning and development. This course reflects the application of theory to practice in the development of curriculum for children from infancy to school age. The role of the adult in planning and creating environments and materials that support learning and development through play will be explored in the context of family, culture and community. Children's development and learning through creative expression and arts based experiences will be examined. Students will have the opportunity to experience a variety of artistic media the class. This will involve the selection, the set-up, organization and tidy-up of creative materials. Students will be responsible for completing the required reading in preparation for STUDIO class.
